Brave No. 1 single Garrett Callahan

(Franklin, GA) — The male and female Brave tennis teams are each heading to the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA Class AA State Playoffs following round one wins versus Region 6-AA yesterday in Franklin.

The Lady Braves advanced via forfeit when the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AA South Atlanta did not make the trip to Heard High for the scheduled round one match.

The Lady Braves will move on to host the Region 7-AA No. 2 seeded Armuchee Lady Indians who swept Monticello from Region 8-AA 5-0 in round one at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College on Wednesday.

In boys’ action, Region 6-AA No. 3 seed Douglas only fielded three single’s competitors for the match and the Braves dominated them to earn a shot at the Sweet 16.

No. 1 Garrett Callahan won his match 6-0, 6-1 while No. 2 Jordan Cornelius and No. 3 Thad Higgins each swept their opponents via 6-0, 6-0 shutouts.

The Braves will travel to Rome next week to take on top-seeded Model from Region 7-AA.

Both squads will be looking to make school history next week by becoming the first Brave tennis team to reach the Elite 8 bracket at the state tournament.
