(Franklin, GA) — The upstart Heard County High School female golf team closed out a strong season recently with a strong showing at the area golf meet.

The girls meet took fourth place on April 30 at the Elk’s Club in Calhoun.

The young Lady Braves narrowly missed earning a shot at the state championships with a team score of 221 but did finish as the best team in Region 5-AA.

Leading the way for the prep golfers at area was freshman Shelby Oldham. She scored a solid 49 on nine holes and was recognized at the HCHS Spring Sports banquet as the Lady Braves Team MVP for the season.

Sophomore Caroline Jones also finished a strong season and was named the Newcomer of the Year at the banquet. Rounding out the award winners was junior Taylor Paris who received the Coaches Award.

Brave head golf coach D.J. Curbow thinks all three girls have a chance to compete at the state level in the coming years as they continue to improve their play on the course.

The Brave boys team also worked hard all season long and finished in 11th place at the area tourney. The top male golfers for the 2018 season were MVP’s junior Chandler Hindman and freshman Bob Henderson.

Rounding out the young male team were sophomores Garrett Curbow, Jacob Holdridge, and Harmon Dawson along with freshmen Bo Hazel and Chance Curbow.

With no seniors on either squad, the teams should both improve tremendously in a sport typically dominated by larger city schools and private schools.

Coach Curbow says that a couple of his top golfers, especially the girls could go on to pay at the next level.
