(Franklin, GA) — The new Heard County High School Lady Braves varsity volleyball team traveled to Greenville Tuesday for their second game of the season.
The young team was competitive versus the more experienced Lady Patriots but ultimately lost the match after dropping the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-15 in the best-of-three format.
The squad were defeated in their first match of the season last week at Jordan. First year head coach Spencer Campbell was pleased with the improvement shown by his upstart girls after just two matches.
“Our performance today was a real improvement over our match last week at Jordan — so I am happy with that,” said Coach Campbell after the match at Greenville Tuesday. “Our serve receive was much better today but we’ve still got some improvements we need to make defensively and and we’ve just got to execute on offense.”
The Lady Braves are a young squad featuring just two seniors, Kailey Schneider and Destanie Murphy. Campbell says both seniors have played well early on as has a young freshman.
“Kailey had a long rally of serves for us today in the first set to keep the match close and Destiny Murphy also served really well today to help keep us in it,” added Campbell.
“Our freshman setter Madison Adams has shown a lot of improvement and I really like what I am seeing from her and all of our other ladies are improving and doing well too.”
Campbell says there are obvious challenges with a first year team but thinks if the squad continues to work hard they could eventually do well at the area tournament in October.
“A lot of it is just earning trust with the team and that’s one of those things that builds over time,” says the coach. “Being this was only our second true competition they are still trying to figure each other out at game level speed. Once we get that down and get a few more games in our system, I think we will be read to go later in the season.”
Rounding out the varsity roster for the Lady Braves are Cheyenne Wynn, Zoe Spradlin, Madi Schneider, Meaghan Goddard, Faith Murphy, and Brooklyn Curbow.
The Lady Braves also have a junior varsity team that is being led by assistant varsity coach Amanda Gleasure. The junior varsity include roster consists of Amber Elkins, Zoey Drew, Aubree Williams, Tiana Thrash, Ansley Tisdale, Harleigh Dudley, and Cora Lee Curbow.
Both the varsity and JV Lady Braves will host their first home matches Thursday in the HCHS gymnasium versus Central-Talbotton. JV serves up at 5PM followed by the varsity at 6PM.
HCHS has not courted a women’s volleyball team since 2011.
